Fethiye

The underrated Turquoise Coast in Turkey has it all: from a spectacular aquamarine coastline to ancient ruins and cities. Read on for the best things to do in Fethiye and Oludeniz!
Fethiye's natural harbour is perhaps the region's finest, tucked into the southern reaches of a broad bay scattered with pretty islands, including Şövalye Adası, glimpsed briefly in the James Bond film Skyfall. Fethiye also makes a good base for visiting Ölüdeniz, one of Turkey's seaside hot-spots, and many interesting sites in the surrounding countryside, including the ghost town of Kayaköy (also called Karmylassos or Levissi) just over the hill.

Çalış Beach

Çalış Beach

About 5km northeast of Fethiye's centre is Çalış, a narrow stretch of gravel beach lined with mass-produced hotels as well as pubs and chip shops patronised by British expats. Part of the James Bond film Skyfall was shot here. Dolmuşes depart for Çalış from the minibus station beside the mosque every five to 10 minutes.

On the hillside above (and south of) Fethiye and along the road to Kayaköy, you can't miss the ruined tower of a Crusader fortress, built by the Knights of St John at the start of the 15th century on earlier (perhaps Lycian, Greek and Roman) foundations.
Roman Theatre

Roman Theatre

In the centre of Fethiye, just behind the harbour, is Telmessos' 6000-seat Roman theatre dating from the 2nd century BC. Neglected for years, it was undergoing serious restoration when we passed through.
